PUBLIC SECTOR EXPENDITURE AND AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY IN NIGERIA
(Covenant University Ota, 2025-03) DUL, SOLOMON FANKUN; Covenant University, Thesis
The agricultural sector has been known to be the backbone of the Nigerian economy ever since the discovery of crude oil in commercial quantity. The sector’s contribution to Gross Domestic Product is 24 percent, 70 percent to total employment and 12 percent from foreign exchange earnings. The Federal Government of Nigeria changes the direction of its expenditure from agriculture to crude oil over time, relegating agriculture to the background. As a result of the challenge of the neglect of agriculture, the researcher must investigate public sector expenditure on agriculture and its effect on agricultural productivity in Nigeria. The study adopts Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) and autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) for the test estimation for short-run and long-run relationships between the dependent and independent variables, using time series data obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The findings of the study reveal that ACEXD has a positive and significant co-efficient impact of 0.003966 on AGPO in Nigeria for the long-run relationship. AREXD has a negative and significant co-efficient impact of 0.003805 on AGPO in Nigeria for the long-run relationship. The result of ATEXD shows a positive and significant co-efficient impact of 0.948588 on AGPO. AVAPW has a negative but insignificant co-efficient impact of 0.002075 on AGPO. INTR has a positive but insignificant co-efficient impact of 0.002546 on AGPO. EXVAL has a negative and significant co-efficient impact of 0.008628 on AGPO. CRAGR to DMBs has a positive but insignificant co-efficient impact of 0.001758 on AGPO. EFFRA of public sector expenditure has a positive and significant co-efficient impact of 0.959348 on AGPO in Nigeria. The study, therefore, recommends that the government and other stakeholders in agriculture invest more in technology and innovation in agriculture and increase budget allocation to agriculture in line with the stipulation of the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP) and Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), Government to have engagement with agricultural stakeholders, government to review agricultural policies and programmes, and government to invest in human capital in agriculture.

SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCING AND DECEPTIVE PRACTICES: A STUDY OF INSTAGRAM’S SKIN CARE INFLUENCERS
(Covenant University Ota, 2025-04) OKECHUKWU, IFUNANYA GRACE; Covenant University, Dissertation
The porosity of the digital media has contributed to the adoption of manipulation and deceit by influencers and brands alike in product-promotion. The study investigates and identifies various deceptive practices used by social media skin care influencers, through focus group discussion and survey of university students in Lagos state using the cluster sampling and the purposive sampling techniques. Results show that 80% of the respondents agree that skin care influencers use deceptive practices in the promotion of skin care products, however, 60% of these respondents are of the view that although skin care influencers adopt deceptive practices, they are equally very useful in not just brand promotion but also for helping skin care consumers in their skin care purchase decision making. The engagement of influencers in the promotion of skin care products on social media is viable but can gain more acceptability based on the attractiveness, trustworthiness and expertise of the influencers, as well as the maintenance and the projection of a circular and consistent collaboration with the brands inorder to build credibility in the minds of skin care consumers. Regulatory bodies in Nigeria like (ARCON) should set up control measures to regulate product influencing in Nigeria, as well as carry out marketing research on brand and influencer activities (a performance survey) addressing different areas of consumers’ experience online with different brands and products. Furthermore, a symbiotic relationship between brands and their influencers is highly encouraged.

ADOPTION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI): IMPLICATION FOR JOB PERFORMANCE IN THE ADVERTISING INDUSTRY IN NIGERIA
(Covenant University Ota, 2025-04) AMUSAN, BOLUWATIFE FOLASHADE; Covenant Uiversity, Dissertation
Integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Nigeria’s advertising sector has significantly transformed operational practices, particularly in media buying, copywriting, market research, and content creation. This study examines the effects of artificial intelligence on job performance, highlighting both the advantages and challenges of incorporating technology within the Nigerian advertising landscape. Focusing on advertising agencies in Ikeja, Lagos State, the research aims to assess how adopting AI influences the efficiency and effectiveness of the industry. The study adopted a mixed-methods approach, featuring a quantitative survey of 305 participants and in-depth interviews with five media buyers. The study utilised the Technology Acceptance Model and the Diffusion of Innovation Theory to analyse how media buyers embrace and utilise AI technologies. Findings indicate that AI tools enhance job performance, productivity, and efficiency in advertising tasks. However, the absence of a human touch in AI-generated content, reliance on user input, and AI's limitations in recognising human errors highlight the necessity for human oversight and correction. Thus, while AI has the potential to boost job performance and significantly reshape the future of Nigeria’s advertising industry, addressing ethical concerns and finding appropriate solutions are essential for the sustainable development of this integration.

ETHICAL LEADERSHIP AND EMPLOYEES’ ENGAGEMENT IN ADO/ODO OTA LOCAL GOVERNMENT COUNCIL, OGUN STATE, NIGERIA
(Covenant University Ota, 2025-03) DAVID OLUWABIMPE OMOLAYO; Covenant University Dissertation
Ethical leadership is considered one of the critical determinants of Employees’ engagement, especially within the public sector, where the manifestation of unethical practices erodes trust, reduces motivation, and, in essence, undermines the performance of such organisations. This study explored ethical leadership and Employees’ engagement within Ado/Odo Ota Local Government Council, Ogun State, Nigeria, as it relates to impediments to ethical leadership, strategies for strengthening Employees’ engagement, and environmental drivers that influence ethical leadership adoption. Quantitative data from 189 employees were collected through structured questionnaire, while qualitative insights were gathered from seven key informants who were department heads and senior administrators. Quantitative data analysis was done using SPSS 27, and thematic analysis of qualitative data was performed using ATLAS.ti 25. The results indicate that ethical leadership is significantly and positively related to Employees’ engagement, as evidenced by a correlation coefficient of 0.245, p = 0.001. The study considered political interference, resource constraints, and socio-cultural norms as critical impediments to ethical leadership in Nigerian local governance. In addition, this study identified the need for clearly defined ethics policies, ongoing leadership training, incentive structures, and enhanced transparency mechanisms necessary to establish an ethical organisational culture. This study adds much value to the theory by pushing forward the discussion of ethical leadership in public administration and governance. It thus gave empirical evidence that ethical leadership enhances Employees’ engagement by instilling employee trust, accountability, and professionalism. The findings have implications for policymakers and human resource managers in formulating targeted interventions to mitigate leadership challenges and promote a more engaged workforce in local government settings. This study has established ethical leadership as influencing Employees’ engagement in Ado/Odo Ota LGC. However, considering the geographical focus, the study concludes that future research should be expanded to broader contexts to enhance the generalisability of findings and further explore the nuanced relationship between ethical leadership and Employees’ engagement across diverse institutional settings.

Tax and sustainable development in sub-Saharan Africa
(WIDER Working Paper 2023/54, 2023-04) Adegboye Alex; Abrams M. L.
Abstract: This paper establishes how accountability quality might mediate the effect of tax revenue on sustainable development in 41 sub-Saharan African countries for the period 1990–2019. The empirical evidence is based on three empirical strategies: generalized method of moments, instrumental variable Tobit, and quantile regressions. The following findings are revealed. First, accountability dynamics influence tax revenue in ways that have favourable net effects on sustainable development. Second, the conditional impacts between accountability dynamics and tax revenues are constantly negative, even though the demonstrated net effects are compatible with the paper’s theoretical predictions. Third, the net consequences are decomposed to establish thresholds for further policy. Thresholds are points where there are no net effects and where further intensifying accountability dynamics would produce adverse net impacts. At the stated thresholds, further policy actions must be complemented with accountability dynamics in order to modulate tax revenues for strong sustainability. We conclude that policy makers in sub-Saharan African nations should coordinate measures that improve accountability in view of other complementary policies, because accountability serves as a ‘force multiplier’ enhancing the absorptive capacity of tax mobilization, which in turn promotes strong sustainability.

Liquidity Management on The Performance of Listed Insurance Companies in Nigeria*
(Communications of International Proceedings (IBIMA Publishing), 2022) Oluwatobi Fasheyitan David; Ikpefan Ochei Ailemen; Adegboye Alex
A business's viability and success is largely influenced by its liquidity management style and control. This is because either inadequate or excess liquidity may impair the smooth operation of the business. This apparent problem has sparked considerable interest in issues of the management of liquidity in the context of significant financial outlays. However, diagnosis has been scarce in the insurance industry. Thus, the article's objective is to investigate how liquidity impacts the entire performance that results in financial efficiency. The research is based on a sample of ten insurance companies that were publicly traded on the Nigerian Stock Exchange from 2013 to 2019. Using a random effect panel regression model, this research discovered that liquidity management had a strong negative correlation with financial performance metrics in Nigeria's insurance industry. However, just a single positive coefficient was observed with current ratio affects performance in relation to ROA, while ROE was automatically insignificant when the same variables were used. Additionally, what set this investigation apart was the inclusion of economic factors that had no impact on the research. The study concludes, among other things, that given the volatility or risk level connected with insurance companies' services, it is critical for them to constantly invest in accessible assets regardless of the associated cost of payment or in meeting their commitments.

The mobile phone technology, gender inclusive education and public accountability in Sub-Saharan Africa
    (Telecommunications Policy Volume 45, Issue 4,, 2021-05) Asongu A.; Adegboye Alex; Ejemeyovwi Jeremiah O.; Umukoro O. E.
This study assesses the relevance of mobile phone technology in complementing gender inclusive education (i.e. primary, secondary and tertiary) to promote public accountability (i.e. involving horizontal, vertical and diagonal accountability dynamics). The study utilizes the generalized method of moments (GMM) technique to establish the empirical evidence based on 48 Sub-Saharan African countries for the period 2005– 2018. The following findings are documented from the linkages between mobile phone technology, inclusive education and public accountability. First, the interactions between mobile phone technology and inclusive education promote public accountability. Second, with regard to net effects, while unexpected negative signs are established, the corresponding positive interactive effects indicate that enhancing the penetration of mobile phone technology beyond some critical thresholds ensures positive net effects. Hence, policy makers should ensure that mobile phone technology penetration exceeds the established thresholds in order for gender inclusive education to positively affect public accountability.
