Deforestation and Greening the Nigerian Environment

| dc.description | Trees in forested and agricultural landscapes are particularly important because they disproportionately provide high values of environmental services and biodiversity. The Government has over the years promulgated laws as regards forest conservation and protection but these laws are not enforced. The objective of this study is to analyze the current deforestation status of the Nigerian economy and its capacity for depleting the green environment. The methodological approach to this study relies on the use of primary data sources. The data were sourced through questionnaire and interview to test the participation of households in deforestation activities from the six geo-political zones of Nigeria. The Results of the qualitative analysis shows that poverty, awareness and lack of enforcement are important variables that affect greening the environment. The paper concludes that the three levels of Government, communities and individuals can successfully manage forests in a sustainable way, when the appropriate policy actions are enforced. | |
