The Role of the Architect in Sustainable Development of Nigeria.
Abstract
Description
Over the years, the finite characteristic of natural resources and the harmful impact of unguided development activities have become realities. Presently, development in many countries of the world is guided by the broad concept of sustainability. Architects play a major role in development activities in the built environment of any nation, especially developing countries like Nigeria that are rapidly urbanising. This paper explored the various roles architects can play to ensure that the country develops in a sustainable manner. The methodology adopted was literature search of secondary sources complimented by qualitative data and the author’s views as a practitioner. Data were content analysed to identify emerging themes. Findings indicate that apart from architects’ traditional roles of design and specification, architects can also contribute through training and education; research and development; public enlightenment; and advocacy. The paper concludes that the Nigerian Institute of Architects through its state chapters and the Association of Architectural Educators in Nigeria are positioned to play these vital roles.
