The study was carried out to report on the results of a questionnaire which was designed to determine the effect on job satisfaction of the level of managers within organisation hierarchy in a Federal Ministry in Nigeria. The results show that many managers value the opportunity to exercise high degree of autonomy. Also, top managers report higher satisfaction than lower level managers. It was also revealed that middle level managers in the tvvo departments studied, have little or no difference in need satisfaction. The perceived opportunities for ps_vchological satisfaction are approximately the same in both departments. Howeve1: the self-actualization need was found to be the second most satisfied categ01y and the esteem need the least satisfied. These findings are important to personnel managers responsible for developing recruitment strategies directed at middle level managers aspiring to take a career in the civil service.
